The Marketing Doctor: Thank you for reaching out, Micro-Bananaz! Tell me, what seems to be the problem?
Small Business Owner: We aren’t showing up in search! Our competitor, Jumbonanas Inc. is always showing up on the first page and I can’t find us online. It’s causing us to lose sales and is really starting to hurt our business.
The Marketing Doctor: Oh, no! It sounds like you might have a site ranking problem. Have you been following an SEO strategy?
Small Business Owner: We have been writing lots of blogs, but it doesn’t seem to be helping at all.
The Marketing Doctor: Writing blogs can be a very powerful tool for your business. Have you been targeting specific keywords?
Small Business Owner: Yes! Anything related to bananas. We are just producing blogs on blogs using that keyword because that’s what we want to sell.
The Marketing Doctor: Okay, so you are mainly using the keyword ‘bananas’?
Small Business Owner: Yup, that’s right.
The Marketing Doctor: And how long have you been making blogs?
Small Business Owner: For almost a year and a half now.
The Marketing Doctor: Wow! Good on you for sticking with the blogs for so long. Did you see any results at all from the blogs?
Small Business Owner: Thank you, we were told that SEO efforts can take a long time to see any results, but after a year and a half, we haven’t gotten anything to show for that effort.
The Marketing Doctor: Little to no results, huh?
Small Business Owner: Yup, almost nothing.
The Marketing Doctor: Well, I’ve got some good news for you. Your site ranking problem can be fixed, but there is a little bit of bad news.
Small Business Owner: Alright, Doc, tell me.
The Marketing Doctor: The bad news is that you will potentially have to rewrite the majority of your previous blog posts because they aren’t receiving organic traffic.
Small Business Owner: Okay, but what do I need to do differently?
The Marketing Doctor: Instead of focusing on such a broad keyword like ‘bananas’ that your competitor is ranking for, pick something that is more niche and closer to what you do. For example, pick the keyword Micro Banana and write a blog post that includes your competitor with a title like, “Micro Banana vs Jumbo Banana: Pros, Cons, and When To Use Them.” That way, people may find out by searching for Jumbo Bananas that they would find a better use for Micro Bananas.
Small Business Owner: Won’t that just send some people to my competitor’s website?
The Marketing Doctor: Potentially, yes, but that can be a good thing. When users take the time to read your content, explore links, and share it with friends, those all send positive signals to search engines that your content is valuable. That will start to help your page rank higher.
And eventually, you’ll want to start creating backlinks or references to your content on other websites, but we can revisit that part of the process later.
Small Business Owner: Oh, okay! So, I need to have my blog posts focus on specific keywords while also answering relevant questions that a user might be asking.
The Marketing Doctor: That’s right. By providing some kind of value through entertaining them, engaging with them directly, or answering their questions can all be ways to increase your blog’s value.
It sounds like you’ve got a pretty good grasp on what you need to do next. Do you have any questions for me?
Small Business Owner: No, that all makes sense to me.
The Marketing Doctor: Great! Then go ahead and schedule a follow up appointment with the RoboDoc in about six months and we’ll check in and see how things are going with Micro-Bananaz, LLC.
Small Business Owner: Thanks, Doc!
